Experience Japanese calligraphy, a popular cultural activity in Japan!
This hands-on experience is perfect for travelers who want to explore traditional Japanese culture. Calligraphy not only improves handwriting, but also helps develop good posture and concentration.
You’ll learn how to hold a brush correctly, sit with proper posture, prepare the ink, and write beautiful kanji characters with a brush.
At the end of the session, you can choose a unique item — such as a shikishi board, uchiwa fan, folding fan, daruma doll, wind chime, or hanging scroll — to decorate with your calligraphy and take home as a special souvenir from Japan.
The item is included in the experience fee. No prior experience is necessary — beginners are welcome!
We begin by explaining the tools used in Japanese calligraphy and how to maintain proper posture. Next, you'll have the opportunity to try writing with a brush and immerse yourself in the beauty of this traditional Japanese art. At the end of the session, you will write your chosen characters on a uniquely Japanese item such as a hand fan (uchiwa) or shikishi board, which you can take home as your own personal creation. It will be a one-of-a-kind souvenir and a memorable part of your trip to Japan. The total duration of the experience is approximately 90 minutes. I can speak basic English, but I’ll be using a translation tool to help with communication. For single participants, we kindly ask that men refrain from joining.
At the East Exit of Nishitetsu Kasugabaru Station, please look for the woman holding a panel/sign for the calligraphy experience.
