Common questions about booking Bilbao experiences through SimilarTours
Spring (April-May) and early fall (September-October) offer mild weather and fewer crowds than summer. Wine harvest season in Rioja (September-October) is particularly appealing if you're planning vineyard tours. Winter can be rainy, but it's quieter and still pleasant for city exploration.
Multi-day tours and private guides through wine regions book up fastest, especially July-August and around Spanish holidays - aim for 2-3 weeks ahead. Day trips from Bilbao to places like Biarritz or San Sebastian have more flexibility, but booking a week in advance is smart.
Yes, especially outside Bilbao. The region's food culture, Basque language heritage, and less-touristed villages are better experienced with someone who knows the area. Private guides also handle driving through winding coastal or mountain roads, which many visitors prefer.
Accommodation, guided sightseeing, and meals vary by tour. Wine tours usually include winery visits and tastings. Gastronomic tours often feature restaurant meals and cooking elements. Check the specific tour details before booking to confirm what's covered and what costs extra.
Train and bus connections link Bilbao to San Sebastian (about 2 hours) and other regional towns cheaply and efficiently. For flexibility and coastal drives, private transfers or rentals are popular. Many multi-day tours include transportation as part of the package.
The Guggenheim and modern areas of Bilbao are generally accessible, but the old quarter has steep, narrow streets. Private tours can be tailored to accessible routes, and drivers can drop you near entrances. Check specific tour operators about accessibility before booking.
It's more than just eating - locals take ingredients and technique seriously, and many restaurants don't open until 8 PM for dinner. Gastronomic tours are a real thing here because food is central to Basque identity. If you book a food-focused tour, expect longer meals and smaller group sizes.

Spain
Bilbao sits at the heart of Spain's Basque Country, where industrial heritage meets cutting-edge art and food culture that locals take seriously. Visitors here tend to book multi-day explorations rather than quick city tours - you'll find people pairing Bilbao with San Sebastian's beaches and restaurants, pushing inland to wine regions around Rioja and Ribera del Duero, or heading to dramatic coastal spots like Gaztelugatxe. Wine tours, gastronomic deep-dives, and private guides through the Basque countryside dominate bookings, reflecting how much there is to see and eat beyond the city limits.
