Your experience

Discover the timeless tradition of Japanese mochi making in Kyoto through a hands-on cultural experience. Learn the art of pounding glutinous rice, create a variety of classic sweets, and enjoy your handmade treats with a comforting cup of matcha tea in a small-group setting.

Getting started

Make your way to the cooking studio in Kyoto, where you'll be welcomed by your English-speaking instructor. After a brief introduction to the history of mochi and the class itinerary, you'll join a small group of no more than eight participants. Gather around the traditional mochi-pounding setup and get ready to learn one of Japan's most cherished culinary traditions.

What to expect

• Begin by learning the traditional technique of pounding steamed glutinous rice into soft, chewy mochi using authentic methods. Your instructor will guide you through every step, making it easy for beginners to participate.

• Once the mochi is ready, shape and fill your creations with a variety of classic flavours. Prepare red bean mochi, creamy mochi ice cream, sweet and savoury mitarashi dango, and elegant wagashi inspired by traditional Japanese confectionery.

• Throughout the class, discover the cultural significance of mochi and wagashi in Japanese festivals, celebrations, and everyday life while picking up practical techniques you can recreate at home.

• After the cooking session, sit down to enjoy the sweets you've made, perfectly paired with a cup of traditional matcha tea. The relaxed tasting session offers the perfect opportunity to appreciate the flavours of your handmade creations.

Leave with new culinary skills, a deeper appreciation for Japanese food culture, and memories of an authentic Kyoto experience that goes beyond sightseeing.
