“O Alcazar of joy! Oh golden hall! With you I fulfilled my longings. If in my kingdom only that had, Nothing else I would miss.” This is how Al-Muqtádir, king of the taifa of Saraqusta, described his newly built recreational home, the Aljafería Palace. Since it was built in the s. IX, has had different owners and uses as a palace of the Catholic Monarchs, court and jail of the Holy Office or military barracks, until today as the seat of the Courts of Aragon. This palace is an indispensable part of Spanish-Muslim art and is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site within the “Mudejar Architecture of Aragon” complex. In this visit we will see all the rooms open to the public and we will immerse ourselves in them thanks to digital recreations, photographs, sounds and smells that will transport us over the centuries. Common questions about booking Zaragoza experiences through SimilarTours
Worth stopping. The city has two major basilicas and a cathedral worth a proper look, but honestly what makes Zaragoza sing is pairing a morning walking tour with a half-day or full-day trip into the wine region-Somontano's estates are close enough for a comfortable excursion. That gives you actual time to breathe instead of rushing through.
Walking tours and wine tours aren't usually heavily booked months out, so a few days to a week ahead is typically fine. If you're visiting during a major Spanish holiday or festival, check before you go. Private guides and transfers are more flexible than group departures.
You don't need a car if you book a private transfer or join a guided excursion to Alquezar or the wine region. The old town is walkable, and private transfers work well for Barcelona runs. If you want total freedom to hop between multiple wineries independently, renting a car makes sense.
Yes, especially for Zaragoza's religious architecture. Official guides know the story behind the basilicas and can get you into spaces open only during services. A quick 2-hour intro walk or a longer 3-4 hour private tour beats wandering on your own.
Most combine winery visits with tastings and a meal. Some pair wine with a cultural stop like the Goya birthplace or Alquezar village. Check before you go for exact inclusions-some tours are half-day, others full-day, and meal details vary.
A transfer with a 2-hour stop works if you just want to stretch your legs and grab a quick coffee. For anything more-seeing the basilicas or having a proper meal-book the transfer separate from a guided tour, or add an extra night in Zaragoza instead.
The old town has cobblestones and steep hill sections, so it's uneven. Basilicas and cathedrals have steps at entry. Private walking tours and drivers can adapt routes around accessible areas. Check with individual tour operators before you book if mobility access is important.

Spain
Zaragoza punches above its weight as a smaller Spanish city with serious architectural credentials and wine country on its doorstep. Most visitors split their time between the cathedral-heavy old town and day trips into the surrounding Somontano wine region or over to Barcelona. The tours people actually book here reflect that split: guided walks through the basilicas and historic squares, private transfers out to wine estates and the white villages like Alquezar, and the occasional half-day wine run combined with a winery lunch. It's the kind of place where hiring a driver makes sense if you're region-hopping, and a local guide transforms what might feel like a quick stopover into something worth staying for.
