Common questions about booking Whitehorse experiences through SimilarTours
Mid-September through March offers the best aurora odds, with winter (December-February) giving you the longest dark hours but also the coldest temperatures. Many tours run year-round, so check before you go to see what's operating during your travel dates.
Popular 4 and 5-day aurora packages fill up, especially in peak winter months. Booking 2-3 months ahead is smart if you're traveling November through February, though last-minute availability happens too.
Yes - aurora tours are almost always guided because you need local expertise to find the best viewing spots and understand what you're seeing. Private tours let you customize pace and interests, while group tours keep costs lower and build camaraderie with other aurora hunters.
Most multi-day tours include transport as part of the package, whether that's flights to remote Yukon locations or ground transfers. For city exploring, taxis and rental cars work, but check before you go on winter road conditions if you're visiting December through March.
Longer packages (4-6 days) usually bundle accommodation, meals, guided activities, and sometimes flights. Shorter aurora tours may focus just on the night viewing experience with a guide, so read the details carefully - inclusions vary.
Aurora viewing tours work for most fitness levels since you're mostly standing or sitting outside at night. Huskies experiences and scenic private tours offer gentler alternatives to backcountry hiking, though check accessibility details before booking specific tours.
No - the Yukon gets nearly 24-hour daylight in summer, making aurora invisible. That's when active summer adventures and hiking tours dominate instead.

Whitehorse is where the northern lights steal the show, but the city itself is your launchpad for serious Yukon adventure. Most visitors come for aurora viewing - whether that's a quick 3-day sprint or a longer 5-6 day immersion - often bundled with wildlife tours or dog sledding. Summer brings a different crowd chasing midnight sun hikes and outdoor exploration. Winter dominates the booking calendar, but fall color tours and romantic private guides suggest there's something worth seeing here in every season.
