Experience the artistry of Yamanaka Shikki, one of Japan’s most prestigious traditional crafts. This immersive program offers a rare, close-up look at the intricate production process, accompanied by an insightful guide to its rich history and time-honored techniques.
After the tour, unleash your creativity with a hands-on painting session using authentic urushi (lacquer). Unlike standard workshops, this special program allows you to use a variety of vibrant colors. Whether you choose to recreate timeless Japanese motifs or design something entirely original, you’ll enjoy a perfect blend of tradition and self-expression.
In this experience, you will first observe their work up close and learn about the process of making traditional Japanese lacquerware. Next, you will paint your own illustration on a Yamanaka lacquerware plate using colorful natural lacquer. This allows you to experience the techniques of a maki-e (lacquer decoration) artisan. Working with lacquer can be challenging, but you can freely choose your own colors and designs, making the experience creative and enjoyable. Our staff will carefully support you throughout the process, so you can complete your piece by yourself until the very end. After the workshop, you can relax at our café, where you can enjoy drinks served in lacquerware or taste delicious sweets. Please take your time, unwind, and fully enjoy your lacquerware experience.
You can find our shop behind Morita Shikki, close to the Uwabara Shikki Industrial Area traffic light.
