Dirty Laundry Vineyard’s story is anything but hush-hush! While the winery officially kicked off in the early 2000s, its quirky name dates back to the 1800s when an enterprising railway worker in the Okanagan opened a laundry business. To keep his customers entertained while they waited, a lively gambling den and brothel were added to the mix, earning the nickname "Dirty Laundry." Fast forward to the early 2000s, when Bob Campbell and his partners took over the winery, turning a dream into a reality. Since then, Dirty Laundry has flourished, growing from 1,800 cases to a whopping 35,000 per year, with fan-favorite wines like the Hush Rosé and award-winning Pinot Noir. But the best part? Over a century ago, in 1895, George Greata had a wild dream and a pack mule. He saw the perfect spot for a fruit orchard, perched on a bench above a lake—but there was one big problem: no water! Not one to back down, George decided to build a five-mile wooden flume in 1900 to bring water from a nearby creek. Talk about determination! Thanks to that flume, the orchard bloomed in 1901, and the rest is delicious history. Cheers to George and his vision, making this land thrive for over 100 years! Established in 1999, Thornhaven has been crafting incredible wines for over 20 years, all while soaking in the stunning views from Little Giant’s Head Mountain. With its southwestern Santa Fe design, Thornhaven blends seamlessly into the arid Okanagan landscape of dry grasses, cacti, and Ponderosa pines. The winery's unique gravity-fed system keeps the juice flowing smoothly from crush pad to cellar—no pumps needed! With 18.5 acres across three vineyards, Thornhaven grows a variety of grapes like Pinot Noir, Merlot, Riesling, and more, using both French and American oak barrels to please every palate. Under the skilled guidance of consulting winemaker Christine Leroux and cellar master Jason Fraser, they produce around 5,000 cases of wine a year, turning the Okanagan into a little slice of Tuscany. Back in the Prohibition days, Summerland was a dry town with a secret—its sunny exterior masked a hidden world of bootlegging. While the Dry Squads were on the lookout, savvy locals like the Victoria Cafe’s owner and clandestine peach orchardists kept the wine flowing. Only those with the right knock could access the hidden cellar stocked with forbidden casks. Fast forward to 1953, when Summerland got its first legal liquor store. Today, Back Door Winery, run by Jesse Gill, brings back that rebellious spirit, turning a historic piece of land into a vineyard that celebrates Summerland’s cheeky past with stellar wines.

Mike and Gillian Stohler kicked off SummerGate Winery in 2009 with a mission to create premium wines from their estate-grown grapes. From day one, they’ve embraced natural methods like reduced crop yields, savvy vineyard management, and avoiding petro-chemicals to craft high-quality fruit. Their approach? Hand-harvesting and gently pressing, followed by slow fermentation in small stainless steel tanks. The result is a refreshingly crisp, fruit-forward lineup of wines, with a focus on whites, plus some delightful rosés and frizzante-style options. Built in 1916 by Alfredo Biagioni, this stunning architectural gem took five years to complete, with walls made from Garnet Valley stones and a basement dug by hand (with help from his trusty horse, Nelly!). Locals even whisper about it being haunted! In 1997, Shannon and Claude Ferlizza transformed this historic spot into the cozy, charming Zias we know today, where old-world charm meets a worldly menu. Whether you're admiring the beautiful flower-adorned archway or enjoying a fireside meal, Zias is truly a unique dining experience in the heart of Summerland.
