Private guided experiences, especially ATV excursions and multi-day Cabot Trail tours, fill up during peak season - book 2-3 weeks ahead if you're traveling June through August. Shoulder season visits offer more flexibility.
Most visitors book private tours that include transportation, so you don't need to rent a car if you're doing guided excursions. If you want flexibility to explore between tours, a rental works well - check before you go for current availability.

Cape Breton Island rewards visitors who get off the main road. Most people here book private guided experiences - whether it's a Cabot Trail tour by vehicle, an ATV adventure through backcountry trails, or a cruise excursion spotting coastal wildlife. You'll find history at the Fortress of Louisbourg and the Alexander Graham Bell Museum in Baddeck, plus natural drama at spots like St. Anne's Loop. The island works best with a guide who knows where the light hits the cliffs at golden hour and which forest trails lead somewhere special.
