Scotland Food and Drink selected my experience as one of the best fifty Food and Drink Experiences in 2025, and I am delighted because it is important for guests visiting the Highlands to eat the best of what the region has to offer, incorporated into traditional recipes, and I can guarantee a thoroughly Highland experience. The Cleikum Social Eating Club has been modelled on the Cleikum referred to in Sir Walter Scott’s “St. Ronan’s Well”, and who did more than the latter to introduce the Highlands for romantic destination travel? I was born and brought up in Inverness, and am enthusiastic about the visiting potential of this area, and know it well. I was a hostess/guide in the observation car of the Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh during the summer season when I was at University. I provided a running commentary during the journey, and helped travellers with suggestions on where to eat on arrival, what they should see in the area, and information on the Isle of Skye.

Common questions about booking Inverness experiences through SimilarTours
May through September offer long daylight hours and milder weather - crucial for Highlands photography and island hopping. Winter brings moody light and fewer crowds, but weather can be harsh and daylight is scarce. Check before you go for tour availability and any seasonal closures on ferries or smaller attractions.
Bespoke multi-day Highlands tours and helicopter whisky experiences often require weeks of advance notice, especially in summer. Day tours and private transfers have more flexibility, but booking 2-3 weeks ahead ensures you get your preferred dates and guides.
You'll want a guided tour or private transfer rather than renting a car yourself - the roads are narrow, driving's on the left, and local guides unlock the history of Loch Ness, Skye, and the whisky country. Many tours offer minibus transport or can arrange direct transfers with commentary included.
Absolutely. Local guides know where the Jacobite film locations actually are, can spot golden eagles, and understand the clan histories that shape the landscape. A private heritage tour or bespoke island tour pays for itself in stories and insider access you won't get alone.
Many private tours and transfers are family-friendly, and the Jacobite train with loch cruise is especially popular with children. Check with individual operators about age requirements for helicopter tours or all-day island treks before you book.
Most private heritage and island tours include transport, a guide, and commentary on history or wildlife. Lunch, whisky tastings, and entry fees vary by operator - confirm the itinerary and what's covered when you compare tours on SimilarTours.
Yes, especially if you're short on time. You'll see Highlands scenery and stop at notable spots rather than just sitting in a car, and it's often priced similarly to a straight private transfer.

Inverness is the gateway to Scotland's wild north - a compact cathedral city on the River Ness where Loch Ness stretches south and the Highlands roll in every direction. Travellers here book bespoke whisky tours by helicopter over Speyside, private heritage drives hunting for Hogwarts filming locations, and multi-day island adventures to Skye. The real draw is tailored experiences: you'll find plenty of "build your own" tours in minibuses, private Jacobite train journeys paired with loch cruises, and direct transfers to Edinburgh that turn the drive itself into a guided tour. It's the kind of place where small-group customization beats off-the-shelf itineraries.
