On April 3, 1853, the Unterlinden Museum officially opened its doors. It presents works such as the 3rd-century mosaic discovered in Bergheim, the Isenheim Altarpiece, and the Dominican Altarpiece by Martin Schongauer, seized during the French Revolution.Today, the museum offers visitors dialogue, knowledge, emotion, and pleasure through a journey spanning nearly 7,000 years of history, from prehistory to 21st-century art.At the heart of its archaeology, fine arts, and history collections, visitors discover the many facets of its architecture, unified and enhanced by the 2015 renovation by Herzog & de Meuron.As you explore the former 13th-century convent, the 1906 municipal baths, and the contemporary extension, you’ll witness the evolution of a story spanning over 170 years.
