Munich Private Walking Tour: English Garden, Marienplatz and Munich Residenz

Your Experience

Explore Munich’s English Garden and historic Old Town on a private guided walking tour for 1–25 guests.

Getting started

Meet your guide at the designated starting point in central Munich and begin your private guided tour on foot. After a brief introduction and route overview for your group of 1–25 guests, you set off toward the city’s green heart and then into the Old Town. Your guide leads the way throughout, so you can focus on the surroundings rather than navigation.

What to expect

English Garden

This large urban park is your first main stop, offering a change of pace from the city streets. You follow your guide along its paths to key landmarks that showcase how nature and architectural structures blend within the park.

Features

• The English Garden portion of your private guided tour includes time at the Monopteros, a classical-style temple set on a small hill with open views across the park. Your guide explains its role as a focal point within the landscape.

• You continue on to the Japanese Tea House, where your guide points out how this structure reflects cultural exchange in Munich and how it contrasts with other European-style features in the park.

• The route also brings you to the Chinese Tower, a multi-tiered wooden tower that anchors one of the most active areas of the English Garden. Here you can observe how locals and visitors use the park as a social space as you continue your walk.

Frauenkirche and Marienplatz

Leaving the park, your guide leads you into Munich’s historic center, focusing on its main square and landmark church. This section highlights the city’s religious and civic architecture around Marienplatz.

Features

• At the Frauenkirche, famous for its twin domed towers, your guide pauses outside to point out its recognizable silhouette and explain how it has become one of Munich’s key reference points on the skyline.

• Around Marienplatz, you experience the square’s historic atmosphere as your guide orients you to its layout and surrounding buildings before moving deeper into the Old Town.

• The Mariensäule, a column topped with a golden statue of the Virgin Mary, is another exterior stop, where your guide uses it to illustrate how religious symbols appear in public urban spaces in Munich.

New Town Hall and Viktualienmarkt

Your walk continues through the core of the Old Town past civic architecture and into one of the city’s most active markets. This stage of the tour focuses on how daily life and local commerce intersect with historic buildings.

Features

• Outside the New Town Hall, you see its neo-Gothic façade and detailed carvings up close while your guide draws attention to sculpted figures and structural elements that define its style.

• From there, the route leads to Viktualienmarkt, Munich’s traditional food market, where your guide walks you through the stalls so you can observe how residents shop and socialize in this central space.

• Throughout these stops, your private guided tour format allows your group of 1–25 guests to ask questions and set the pace, keeping the focus on the aspects of architecture, daily life, or culture that interest you most.

Munich Residenz exterior viewpoint

The final major stop is at an exterior viewpoint of the Munich Residenz, the former royal residence in the city center. You remain outside while your guide uses the building’s façades to frame stories of Bavarian rule.

Features

• At the Munich Residenz exterior viewpoint, your guide outlines its role in Bavaria’s royal history using the visible wings and courtyards to explain how power was expressed through architecture.

• This stop is included as part of your private guided tour; however, entrance fees are not covered, and there is no guided tour inside the Munich Residenz, so the experience here focuses on the exterior and its context within central Munich.

Wrapping up

Your tour concludes near the Munich Residenz exterior viewpoint in the Old Town, leaving you well placed to continue exploring central Munich independently or to return easily to other parts of the city.
