What sets our Columbus Basin Jeep Tour apart is its perfect balance of time and adventure. In just 2½ hours, you’ll experience all the hallmarks of a classic Colorado backcountry journey — alpine meadows, waterfalls, wildlife, and history — without committing to a full half-day. Unlike the longer La Plata Canyon tour, which climbs higher to Kennebec Pass at 12,000 feet, this route tops out at 10,745 feet in Columbus Basin, giving you an immersive mountain experience that’s shorter, family-friendly, and easy to fit into a busy Durango itinerary.
Traverse ancient glacial paths in custom open-air 4x4 Jeeps, navigating through narrow ravines and steep terrains. Along the way, witness cascading waterfalls, towering 13,000-foot peaks, and vibrant wildflower meadows or colorful aspen groves depending on the season. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as deer, elk, marmots, and various bird species. Your knowledgeable guide will share insights into the area's rich history, including tales of the once-thriving La Plata City, established in 1875. This small-group tour is perfect for families and adventure seekers alike, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and historical exploration. Tours are available from mid-May through October, with departures at 1:15 PM, ensuring a memorable afternoon in the heart of the Colorado Rockies.
Please park in the dirt lot to the right of the gate at the entrance to La Plata Canyon. Your guide will be parked in the same lot in a red or white safari jeep.
For a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time.
