Meet your knowledgeable guide for a drive to Chilkoot Lake State Park. This park has it all: a turquoise lake surrounded by snowy mountain peaks, a salmon-filled river flowing into the sea, and important Tlingit cultural sights. In May, June and July, the wildflowers are at their peak and eagles caring for their young in the nest. In late July, the river fills with migrating salmon, and harbor seals follow them up into the river where they go to spawn. As the number of salmon in the river increases, so does the chance of seeing bears along the river, with a good probability of bear sightings from early August through September. As you drive through the park, your guide knows the best places to stop for scenery and the possibility of wildlife spotting. Your guide is equipped with a powerful spotting scope to bring the wildlife in close, and your guide will help interpret the behavior of the various wildlife and explain how the animals fit into the Chilkoot’s complex ecosystem.

Common questions about booking Haines experiences through SimilarTours
November through February is peak bald eagle season around the Chilkat River - you'll see hundreds gathered to fish. Summer (June-August) offers longer daylight for hiking and kayaking, plus milder weather. Each season has its appeal, so pick based on whether you want eagles or easier logistics.
Popular eagle preserve float trips and wildlife tours fill quickly, especially during peak season. Book as soon as your travel dates are set - at least 2-3 weeks out is smart, earlier during November-February if you can manage it.
Most tours pick you up from town, so you don't need to rent one. If you want flexibility exploring local trails or reaching trailheads on your own schedule, a car helps - check what's included with your specific tour before you book.
Absolutely. Local guides know where eagles congregate, how to read wildlife behavior, and can navigate rivers and backcountry safely. For photography, wildlife spotting, and backcountry access, a guide transforms a visit from pleasant to unforgettable.
Southeast Alaska is wet and cool year-round. Bring waterproof layers, a good rain jacket, and prepare for mist and occasional downpours even in summer. Winter temperatures hover near freezing, and daylight is limited - but the trade-off is fewer crowds and more eagles.
Many float trips and kayaking tours welcome families, though age minimums vary. Check directly about kids' comfort levels with water, cold, and time outdoors - most outfitters are honest about what works for families versus what doesn't.
Most guided tours include the guide, boat/gear, and instruction. Meals and warm clothing sometimes factor in - ask whether lunch, snacks, or specialized gear rental is bundled or extra before you commit.

Haines sits at the northern tip of Southeast Alaska's Inside Passage, where mountains drop straight into water and bald eagles congregate by the hundreds. Most visitors come here for wildlife and water - you'll find yourself paddling or floating past eagles in their natural habitat, hiking ridgelines with views across the Chilkat Inlet, or navigating rivers by jet boat and canoe. The town itself is small and quiet, but the access to pristine wilderness is what keeps people returning. Photography tours, kayaking expeditions, and backcountry hikes dominate the calendar here, especially during eagle season.
