After the construction of the Main Building I of the Dutch Railways, a small park emerged in front of the building. The avenue south of it was called Moreelselaan.

Around it was a large square, of which the parts to the north and east of the former church still exist, together forming current-day Mariaplaats.

Museum Catharijneconvent is a national museum for religious art in Utrecht. The museum is located in the former monastery, Catharijneconvent, which was presumably dedicated to Catherine of Alexandria as early as the 12th century. The monastery building is attached to the Sint-Catharina Cathedral. The museum originated from various collections.

The Dom Tower of Utrecht (Historical St. Martin's Cathedral) is a distinctive Gothic church in the heart of Utrecht. Construction began in 1254 as a continuation of the Romanesque cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Utrecht, dedicated to St. Martin. Since 1580, the church has been Protestant. The Dom Tower, standing at 112.32 meters, is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands and the tallest building in Utrecht.
