Salerno is an ancient city and comune in Campania (southwestern Italy) and is the capital of the province of the same name. It is located on the Gulf of Salerno on the Tyrrhenian Sea. The city is divided into three distinct zones: the medieval sector, the 19th-century sector, and the more densely populated post-war area, with its several apartment blocks.

The large castle Forte La Carnale was named from an ancient battle that was fought against the Arabs. The fort is now part of a large sports complex that today is used as a local cultural center.

Salerno Cathedral is the main church in the city of Salerno in southern Italy and a major tourist attraction. It is dedicated to Saint Matthew, whose relics are inside the crypt. The Cathedral was built when the city was the capital of the Principality of Salerno.

Minerva's Garden is located in the heart of the old town of Salerno, in a zone known as the "Plaium montis" in the Middle Ages.
