Tomoyoshi, the instructor, will give you a short lecture on how the ancient swordsmanship of Samurai developed into Kendo. He will share the heroic stories of ancient Samurai including his great-grandfather, Yoshishige Hayashi. He will also share the controversial influence of Bushido values on this nation and his family into extremism, especially during the period of WW2. He will end his story on how redemption came and led him to the current inner peace and the life of a pacifist.

After the lecture, you will wear the full Kendo armor and learn the basic Kendo movements. In the end, you will get to do a Kendo match with each other. Upon completing the workshop, you will receive a beautifully designed “Certificate of Experience”.

Learn about the history of Kendo and how it developed to become the martial arts form it is now
Hear the stories of ancient Samurai, the controversial influence of Bushido, and how it affected the lecturer's great-grandfather during the period of WW2. After getting a better insight into Kendo, prepare to experience it for yourself. Wear the full armor, learn the basic movements, and put your new skills to the test during a match with a partner. The main venue will be Kyoto's own "Butokuden" in Kyoto Budo Center. It is in the hall of fame and is the oldest Kendo Dojo in the world. It was built in 1899 and miraculously survived the WW2 devastation. The Dojo is considered the most sacred martial arts center in Japan, so please act respectfully. The experience is in English and Q&A is always welcomed. Our lecturer's wife, who also has a rich Kendo experience will assist ladies and children in any necessary way. It is a very safe activity but exciting enough to meet your adventurous expectation. We are confident that this is one of the best workshops you can find of this kind!
