Fela lived there with his family until his passing in 1997 and the Museum is packed with his personal belongings and artefacts relating to his life and career. Fela's tomb is within the premises of the museum. The name Kalakuta Republic means Rascal in Swahili. The Kalakuta Museum was officially opened in 2012, on October 15th which is Fela’s birthday. The Museum is now managed by Fela’s son, Kunle.
