Les mines ont fonctionné de 1971 à 1981 et c'était l'une des mines les plus modernes d'Europe, construite avec des critères très innovants pour l'époque. Au moment de l'interruption de l'activité minière, seul 1/3 du gisement était exploité, malgré le fait qu'il reste encore beaucoup de fer dans les profondeurs, disponible jusqu'à 250 mètres sous le niveau de la mer.
