Visit to the Ischigualasto Provincial park, world natural heritage and natural science museum. Is located in the northeast of the province of San Juan, 205 miles from its capital city. Popularly known as the Moon Valley, this fascinating and strange place covers about 153 000 acres and, together with its neighbor, Talampaya in the province of La Rioja, it was declared Mankind’s Heritage. Its importance resides in the scientific value of the paleontological findings made in the area: an almost complete sequence of the Triassic Period of the Mesozoic Era. To visit Ischigualasto means walking on the lands that dinosaurs inhabited 180-million years ago. The moon-like soil and strange geoforms sculpted by the water, sun and wind on the rocks over million of years, has turned this place into an otherworldly site. Return by Nacional Route 150, taking a new route to Cuesta del Huaco. Return to San Juan in the afternoon.

Common questions about booking San Juan experiences through SimilarTours
High mountain treks and horseback rides work best from late spring through early autumn (November to March), when passes are snow-free and temperatures more stable. Stargazing trips happen year-round, though clearer skies often come in drier months. Check before you go, especially for multi-day mountain crossings that depend on weather windows.
Multi-day experiences like the high mountain horseback crossing and full-day Ischigualasto trips are worth booking a week or two in advance if you're traveling during peak season. Day tours and shorter treks usually have more availability, but booking ahead guarantees you're not disappointed.
Guided tours make a real difference here. Local guides know which treks lead to the turquoise creeks, they understand mountain conditions, and they can explain the geological story at Valley of the Moon in ways you won't find on signs. Most people book guided experiences rather than going solo.
Renting a car gives you the most flexibility for the scenic routes through the valleys and reaches to trailheads. Many day tours include transport from San Juan town, so if you're staying a few days, mixing self-driven exploration with organized trips works well.
Horseback treks and multi-day mountain crossings suit older kids and teens with riding experience. Day hikes to creeks and valley drives work for mixed ages. Check with tour operators about age minimums and physical demands for specific trips before you book.
Full-day and multi-day mountain tours usually include transport, a guide, and sometimes meals - check before you go for specifics. Stargazing experiences often bundle the guide and telescope access. Shorter hikes may be guide-only, so bring water and snacks.
They're both worth the trip if you have 2-3 days. Ischigualasto (Valley of the Moon) has surreal multicolored rock formations and dinosaur history. Talampaya offers different desert landscapes and rock canyons. Many visitors do day tours to each rather than back-to-back.

Argentina
San Juan sits in Argentina's northwest, a sprawling province where the Andes meet desert landscapes unlike anywhere else. Visitors come here for serious outdoor pursuits: multi-day horseback crossings through high mountain passes, treks to turquoise streams and hidden valleys, and day trips to two of South America's most otherworldly geological sites - Ischigualasto (the Valley of the Moon) and Talampaya National Park. You'll also find stargazing experiences in remote mountain towns and scenic drives through church-dotted valleys. Most people hire local guides, and distances between attractions can be significant.
