Common questions about booking El Calafate experiences through SimilarTours
October through April is peak season, with December-February offering the warmest weather and longest daylight for trekking. Shoulder months (October-November, March-April) are less crowded and often cheaper. Winter months (May-September) see fewer tours operating and frequent closures due to snow, though the landscape is striking if you don't mind cold and shorter days.
Big Ice treks and Perito Moreno Glacier tours are available year-round but fill quickly in peak season - book 1-2 weeks ahead if you can. Multi-day treks like Fitz Roy or longer Patagonia itineraries benefit from booking 3-4 weeks out to lock in dates and guides.
Yes. The glacier is accessible independently, but a guide explains the ice dynamics and geology in ways that transform the experience. For trekking Fitz Roy or navigating ice walks on Perito Moreno itself, a guide is nearly essential for safety and logistics - the tours handle transport, camping, and route planning that'd be complicated solo.
Most tours include transport from your hotel. Perito Moreno Glacier is about 80km from town, typically a 1.5-2 hour drive. For exploring El Chaltén (hiking Fitz Roy area), it's another 3 hours north. Rental cars exist but aren't necessary if you're booking organized tours.
The Perito Moreno Glacier viewing platforms are accessible for all ages and fitness levels. Some 4-day adventure tours include family-friendly hiking and camping. Longer or technical treks (like the Fitz Roy trek) are better for fit teenagers and adults. Check tour descriptions for age/fitness requirements before booking.
Bring layered clothing - weather shifts fast and wind is constant. Waterproof jacket and hiking boots are non-negotiable for any glacier or trekking tour. Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses protect against intense southern sun reflecting off ice. Tours typically specify what else is provided (crampons, helmets, camping gear) - check before you go.
Absolutely - that's what many of the longer tours do. Multi-day itineraries commonly link El Calafate with El Chaltén (Fitz Roy), Puerto Natales, and Torres del Paine in Chile. You can also book 11-13 day loops that include Tierra del Fuego. These are structured tours with transport and accommodation arranged.

El Calafate sits at the edge of Los Glaciares National Park, where the Perito Moreno Glacier dominates the landscape with its massive blue ice walls. Most visitors come for the glacier itself - you can walk right up to it, trek across it, or navigate by boat for different angles. But the region offers far more: multi-day treks to Fitz Roy in nearby El Chaltén, private tours through Torres del Paine just across the border in Chile, and multi-week Patagonia loops that string together glaciers, mountains, and national parks. Whether you're here for 4 days or 2 weeks, the tours tend toward active experiences - hiking, trekking, camping - rather than passive sightseeing.
