In the late 1950s, amid a dramatic landscape of eroded sandstone pillars, archaeologists unearthed one of the most significant Stone Age finds ever identified. Tools found at the site – hammerstones, axeheads, flints and scrapers – are estimated to be between 60,000 and 100,000 years old. There’s a museum with small, well-captioned displays highlighting some of the discoveries. Isimila is signposted off the Mbeya road to the left, about 21km southwest of Iringa.

Ruaha National Park is renowned for its excellent wildlife-sighting opportunities. Combined with the low numbers of visitors, this makes it a spectacular destination. Waterbuck, impala, and gazelle come to the river to drink and predators are never far behind. You may spot lion or leopard prowling watchfully along the banks, or cheetah lying in wait on the plains, while skulking jackal and hyena are on the lookout for an opportunity to catch their next meal.

Common questions about booking Iringa Region experiences through SimilarTours
Most people book 4-7 days here. A 2-3 day stint covers one park decently, but the real appeal emerges when you split time between Ruaha and Mikumi-it gives you landscape variety and better wildlife odds. If you're combining with Udzungwa's mountains, plan closer to 7 days.
A guide is worth every shilling. They'll spot wildlife you'd miss, know where animals congregate by season, and handle park logistics. Most tour operators here handle guiding as standard, so you're not adding much to the cost.
Dry season (June-October) offers the clearest skies and easiest game viewing, though parks stay open year-round. Green season (November-April) brings fewer tourists and lush landscapes, though wildlife scatters more. Check before you go, as annual patterns shift.
Book popular 5-7 day combos a month or two ahead, especially if you're traveling in peak season. Shorter 2-4 day safaris sometimes slot in with less lead time, but check availability early to avoid disappointment.
Yes, but with caveats. Open vehicle safaris work well for older children who can sit still; very young kids may find long game drives tiring. Ask tour operators about child-friendly timing and whether they adjust driving hours-most accommodate families when you mention it upfront.
Park fees, vehicle, guide, and meals are standard. Accommodation ranges from budget to mid-range lodges depending on the package. Check before you go on what transport to/from Iringa town costs and whether internal flights (if applicable) are bundled in.
Most tour operators arrange transfers by vehicle or coordinate domestic flights from nearby airstrips. Multi-park itineraries handle this logistics, so you're not arranging it alone. Distances are real (roads aren't quick), so longer combos make sense logistically.

Tanzania
Iringa Region sits in southern Tanzania where the wildlife action centers on two standout parks: Ruaha and Mikumi. Most visitors spend 3-7 days here, often combining both parks in a single trip to see elephant herds, lions, and crocodile-filled rivers without the crowding of the north. You'll find shorter 2-4 day focused safaris if time's tight, or longer 8-9 day itineraries that weave in the Udzungwa Mountains for hiking and forest wildlife. This is serious safari country where a guide makes all the difference.
