Our editorial methodology - what makes a tour appear on SimilarTours, how we describe it, and how we keep the data current.
What we cover
SimilarTours' blog covers tours and activities we can route a booking to - meaning every tour mentioned in an article is present in our live partner-OTA catalogs at publish time. We do not write about tours we cannot link to. We do not invent tours. We do not describe tour operators we are not partnered with.
Where our product data comes from
Tour titles, prices, durations, traveler ratings, and review counts come directly from the application programming interfaces (APIs) of our partner operators. Specifically:
- Prices are pulled from the "from" price field in the partner's product summary at the time of publication. They are refreshed on a regular cadence and a "verified" timestamp is shown on each article.
- Ratings and review counts are pulled from the partner's reviews summary endpoint at the time of publication.
- Durations and what's-included details are pulled from the partner's structured product fields, not by paraphrasing the partner's long-form description.
When a product's data changes between refreshes - for example if the price increases or the operator pauses bookings - our article may briefly be out of sync. The exact price and availability you see at booking time is the price on our partner's site, which is always the source of truth.
What we will NOT write
We have specific editorial rules our writers and our content tooling follow. These rules exist to prevent the kinds of errors automated content typically introduces and to comply with our partner agreements.
- No rewritten partner product descriptions. Our partner agreements forbid republishing or paraphrasing their long-form product descriptions. We describe products from the structured fields (title, duration, what's included, category, traveler rating) instead.
- No invented attraction facts. Our articles do not claim historical dates ("built in 1632 by Bernini"), dimensions ("7 km of galleries"), visitor counts, or attribution facts about the attractions themselves unless those facts come from a verified source. We describe attractions in experiential and operational terms ("an iconic landmark in central Rome," "ideal for first-time visitors," "skip-the-line access is essential in summer") - not encyclopedic ones.
- No invented prices, durations, or ratings. Every numeric claim about a product is from an API field verbatim. Where a field is missing, we omit the claim - we do not fill in from training data or assumptions.
- No fake first-person experience. Our editorial team has not personally visited every tour we describe. We are a data-driven editorial operation, not a travel-memoir publication. We say things like "Of the 12 Colosseum tours in our catalog, 8 offer skip-the-line access" - which is true and verifiable - rather than "I queued for 90 minutes last Tuesday," which would not be.
How articles are produced
SimilarTours uses an editorial pipeline that combines automated data binding with template-level editorial review:
- A target topic is selected from our content backlog (for example, "best things to do in Rome").
- Our editorial tooling queries the live partner catalog for tours matching the topic. The catalog response - product titles, prices, durations, ratings - is the source of truth for every product reference in the article.
- The article is drafted using a template that has been signed off by our editor of record. The draft is constrained to describe products that came back from the catalog query.
- The article emits structured data (Schema.org
BlogPosting, BreadcrumbList, ItemList) so that Google, AI assistants, and other consumers of structured data can read the same product list our readers see. - The article is published, registered in our sitemap, and scheduled for periodic re-verification.
Updates and re-verification
Tours-and-activities prices and availability change frequently. We re-verify the data in each article on a regular cadence. The "Updated" date on each article reflects the most recent substantive review of the editorial content. The "Verified" date reflects the most recent live-data refresh.
If you spot something out of date or incorrect - a price that looks wrong, a tour that no longer runs, anything else - please get in touch via our contact page.
Affiliate disclosure
SimilarTours earns affiliate commission on bookings made through our partner operators. This does not affect the price you pay. Full details on our Affiliate Disclosure page.
Who's responsible
Our editorial methodology and content quality are overseen by our editor of record. The editor signs off on the templates, methodology, and editorial rules that the content tooling operates within. Individual articles are not signed off individually - they are signed off at the methodology level, which is what allows us to keep the data fresh at scale.
