It is surrounded by the City Moat, a remnant of the complex system of fortifications, largely based on natural and artificial sections of the Oder River and the Oława River flowing into it. The green belt along the moat (and further along the Oder) is called the Old Town Promenade.

Designed by Richard Plüddemann, it was built between 1906-08[1] as the Breslauer Markthalle Nr 1, when the city was part of German Empire. The Hall was renowned for its then-innovative application of reinforced concrete trusses, which was unique in Europe at the time.

John the Baptist in Wroclaw is a Roman Catholic Gothic parish church, as well as the cathedral church of the Bishops of Wroclaw located in Wroclaw's Cathedral Island on Cathedral Square.

The square is rectangular with the dimensions 213 by 178 metres (699 ft × 584 ft) and now serves as a pedestrian zone. It is one of the largest market squares in Europe, with the largest two city halls in the country.
