During the Japanese colonial period, it became one of Taichung’s most prominent ophthalmology clinics. Today, the building has been beautifully preserved by Dawn Cake, a local pastry company known for its pineapple cakes, retaining its iconic red-brick walls and distinctive archways. Rainbow Village was created by Huang Yung-Fu, a former soldier who began painting the houses in his settlement in an effort to save them from demolition. Over time, his vibrant artwork featuring colorful birds, animals, people, and playful patterns spread across the remaining houses, transforming the settlement into a lively outdoor art space. Once part of a larger settlement that reportedly contained around 1,200 homes, Rainbow Village has since become a beloved cultural landmark in Taichung.
