Perugia Truffles Chocolate and Umbrian Food Tour

Meet our guide right in Giardini Carducci, next to the statue of Pietro Vannucci, known as “Il Perugino”, the biggest statue.

We spend all the time in the heart of Perugia historic center. We begin with an introduction to Perugia’s history to then jump into food culture and Umbrian culinary traditions.

Medieval Perugia in one stop: this was built by Pope Paul III in 1540: Rocca Paolina is a subterranean fortress that swallowed an entire medieval neighborhood. Inside, you see atmospheric underground stone streets, giant brick vaults, and embedded remnants of ancient tower-houses now traversed by modern public escalators. We will only see a bit of this from the outside, but you're welcome to enter it by yourselves after the tour.

Stroll along Perugia’s elegant main street while discovering two of the city’s signature flavors. We'll visit a local truffle specialist to learn why Umbria is one of Italy’s great truffle regions and enjoy a small tasting of truffle specialties. Continue to one of Perugia’s historic chocolate stores, connected to the origins of the famous Perugina tradition, to start discovering why Perugia became known as Italy’s chocolate capital.

Visit a traditional local eatery to enjoy Torta al Testo, the region’s famous stone-baked flatbread, freshly filled with local porchetta, and learn about its centuries-old origins and place in Umbrian cuisine. Take time to relax, enjoy your tastings with your guide, and discover the stories behind Perugia’s food traditions before continuing your walk through the historic center.

Reach the spectacular Piazza IV Novembre, Perugia’s medieval heart and a cinematic backdrop featured in films and, more recently, Korean dramas. Take in the Fontana Maggiore and Palazzo dei Priori while discovering the stories behind the square, before going to the next scenic place.

Take in one of Perugia’s panoramic viewpoints while tasting artisan chocolate inspired by the city’s legendary chocolate tradition. From the terrace of the historic covered market, get further into knowing how Perugia became Italy’s chocolate capital and why chocolate remains such an important part of the city’s identity.

End your Perugia food journey with something truly local: the Cappuccino all’Inverso, an original coffee creation born right here in Via Baglioni. Discover the story behind this unique Perugian twist on the classic cappuccino, watch how it’s made, and enjoy it where it all began: the perfect final taste of Perugia.
