Leaving the Gulf of Gaeta behind us, we will follow the coastline accompanied by the rhythmic breath of the sea. The majestic Aragonese Castle stands proudly on a rock overlooking the sea and still seems to watch over the entrance to the port.

At the extreme point of the promontory, the Sanctuary of Montagna Spaccata awaits us. The characteristic chapel dedicated to the Holy Crucifix was built on a rock wedged between the walls of the fissure and still today it resists suspended over the deep blue sea

in the 9th century, at the time of the Duchy of Gaeta, the ships of the Saracens found refuge in the fissures of this strategic promontory, ready to attack the ships in transit by surprise, in order to rob them of their cargoes.

In this scenario that may seem quite ordinary and modern, a small rock outcrop is capable of attracting all the attention: the "ship of Serapo" - so called precisely because its shape vaguely resembles a vessel, above all in windy days in which the silhouette blends into the waves – it is a very small biological site of interest which, every year, welcomes enthusiasts of naturalistic photography and divers.
