Your experience
Move between the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland and a former royal yacht, with a day that shifts from formal palace rooms to life at sea.
Getting started
You can begin with either the palace or the yacht, depending on your plan. Show your mobile ticket at entry, collect your multimedia or audio guide, and start exploring. Both visits are self paced once you’re inside.
What to expect
Palace of Holyroodhouse
This part feels structured but unhurried, where each room leads into the next, and the details slowly build a picture of royal life inside the palace.
Features:
• State Apartments and historic rooms: Move through spaces like the Throne Room, Great Gallery, and State Apartments, where everything from portraits to furniture reflects formal royal use.
• Mary Queen of Scots’ chambers: These rooms feel more personal, with smaller spaces that contrast with the grand halls and give a different sense of how the palace was used.
• Multilingual multimedia guide: The guide explains each room as you enter, helping you understand what you’re looking at and why each space mattered.
• Self paced walkthrough: You can pause, look around, and take your time in each room without being part of a guided group.
Royal Yacht Britannia
This part shifts into a more contained setting, where the layout of the yacht reveals how royal life was organised while travelling.
Features:
• Royal Apartments and State Dining Room: Rooms are arranged neatly and feel practical, showing how formal spaces were adapted for life onboard.
• Crew Quarters and Engine Room: These areas add contrast, showing the working side of the yacht and how everything functioned behind the scenes.
• Multilingual audio guide: As you move through each section, the audio guide explains how different spaces were used during royal voyages.
• Open decks and quieter corners: Stepping outside onto the decks changes the pace, giving you a sense of space and how the yacht balanced movement with routine.
