Getting started

Meet your guide at the south gate ticket gate of Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and join your small-group tour of a maximum of 15 guests. After a brief introduction and distribution of earphones, follow your bilingual Chinese and English-speaking guide into the park. The group then sets off on foot toward the first panda villas, with the visiting order adjusted as needed.

What to expect

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

This guided visit takes you through key areas of the panda base in a set route inside the park. Over approximately 1.5–2 hours, you move between different villas, maternity units, and gardens to see giant pandas at various life stages and red pandas in their dedicated area.

• Start at the sub-adult giant panda villa, where you observe sub-adult giant pandas in their enclosures and hear your guide explain how this stage differs from juvenile and adult life.

• Continue to the juvenile giant panda villa to see younger giant pandas in a separate space, with your guide pointing out behaviors typical of this age group as you walk between viewing areas.

• Visit the sun maternity unit and moon maternity unit in turn, learning from your guide about how newborn and very young pandas are cared for in these specialized maternity units.

• Walk through the red panda garden, where you can watch red pandas in their own garden setting and compare their appearance and habits with the giant pandas you saw earlier in the tour.

• Throughout the visit your small-group guided tour, with a maximum of 15 guests, is led by an expert Chinese and English-speaking guide who uses the included earphones so commentary is easy to hear as you move between stops.
