Kompong Phluk is a floating village located in the middle of Cambodia's largest lake, Tonle Sap. The term “floating” is a bit misleading: the houses are actually built on very tall stilts around 8 meters high. During the rainy season, the lake rises and covers the stilts, giving the illusion that the homes are floating in the water. We learned that these types of villages are built in the middle of the lake to make it easier for fishermen and rice farmers to gather during harvest season. This tour will take you into an enriching cultural immersion of Tonle Sap Lake called Kampong Phluk Village. Learn more about the ecological and economic significance of Tonle Sap Lake to the Cambodians. Catch a glimpse of the uncommon village life and on return will visit The Artisan School and drop at the Old Market free for shopping before taking you back to your hotel.

Bakong's uniqueness lies in its status as the first temple-mountain of the Khmer Empire, serving as the prototype for later structures like Angkor Wat. It is notable for its five-tiered sandstone pyramid, symbolic representation of Mount Meru with its moats and enclosing walls, and the earliest known example of a Naga causeway in Khmer architecture. Additionally, its large, preserved stone guardian statues of elephants and lions on the lower levels are distinctive features. Floating villages is their entire community infrastructure built on water, including homes, schools, and shops, with the entire village moving and adapting its structure to the changing water levels of the seasons. This includes two main types of structures: those that float directly on the water and those that are built on stilts that rise high above the ground during the dry season.
