We will live the tradition of the day of the dead in one of the most emblematic states in Mexico, as is the state of Michoacán that during the night of November 1st the inhabitants sail in small boats and canoes to the Island of Janitzio, where when they reach the pantheon they surround the graves with offerings, flowers, bread, fruits, symbols and memories to venerate and remind their beings that they are no longer on this earthly plane. This tour begins at the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso, a pivotal site in the development of Mexican muralism. Here, you’ll see some of the earliest and most important murals by Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco—including Rivera’s first mural. Next, we’ll visit the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP), home to hundreds of murals created as part of a national effort to use art as a tool for education and social change.
