Choquequirao is located in the Southeastern part of the Cusco city, between the department of Cusco and the department of Apurímac; this is a magnificent variant to know instead of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. In a long five days walk, mountains with variety of flora and fauna will be combined. The ruins have been cleaned today partially by COPESCO, the governmental institution responsible for the tourism in Peru. In the route to Choquequirao, climate is varied, from inter Andean warm zone, to forest eyebrow. The Choquequirao name means “Gold Cradle”, and this city is considered, like sister of Machu Picchu by its similarities. Both are to 1500 meters over a river: Choquequirao - river Apurímac and Machu Picchu - Urubamba River. It was an administrative and religious center. It covers more than 8 hectares and only a single third have been discovered. The archaeologists discover more every day.

This is the short version of the Traditional Inca Trail, It is for people who doesn't have enough time or good physical conditions. This route to Machu Picchu begins at Km 104, where you can reach it by taking the train from Ollantaytambo. This is a trekking of 14 km that take you along the beautifull andean and jungle landscapes, visiting the incredibles archaeological sites on the way and finishing in Machu Picchu by the sungate. Later allow you spend the night in a hotel in Aguas Calientes. The second day you will visit Machu Picchu properly with the tour guide and then return to Cusco by train and then by car.

The trekking route runs through the snow-capped peak of Ausangate Mountain (6372 meters / 20,900 feet). Ausangate Mountain has a great significance among Cusqeñans. To us, this is a sacred peak and we call it “Apu”. Although, this peak can be seen pretty much from most parts of Cusco, only a handful enjoy the view from close. Ausangate Sibinacocha Trek will take you the closest to the peak. The area around Ausangate is dotted with alluring views of turquoise lakes, hot springs and traditional Andean villages. On this trip, you will be visiting the unspoiled lake, Lake Sibinacocha. This lake is a highlight of the wondrous trek. It is a fairly challenging route and trekkers should be acclimatised well before the trek. We usually suspend this trek from December to February due to adverse weather conditions.

The Choquequirao ruins were most likely built during the reign of the Inca king, Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui. They are considered to be the last bastion of resistance and refuge of the Sons of the Sun, who fled from the city of Cusco when it was under siege in 1535.
