About 10 miles (16 km) out of the city, but still within the Krakow metropolitan area, lies the city of Wieliczka, home to the renowned Salt Mine, considered to be the epitome of technological progress made by humans. During the 16th century, royal guests began visiting the mine lured by the developing culture and health benefits. Striking salt-carved monuments line the chambers alongside displays of historic salt-mining technology, an underground lake, four chapels and numerous statues carved by miners.
