The Hmong Batik Class is a full day introduction to art of hemp production, batik design and indigo dyeing. This gives a rare insight into the richness of Hmong culture while in a warm, friendly, family environment. Each student will create a wax resist, Hmong style design on hand loomed hemp or cotton. Due to time constraints it is not possible to complete the dye portion of the process (if you are staying in Sapa for a few days, this an be arranged). The natural hemp renders a beautiful finished piece. Classes take place in our Sapa workshop. Courses begin at around 9.00am (we are flexible) and usually last between 5 and six hours. The day includes information about Hmong symbiology, the importance of textiles and history.

We pick up you from your hotel in Sapa at 7am to go to the largest Flower Hmong market in Northern Vietnam at Bac Ha which is held on Sundays. The market is a 110km drive so the early start is essential. Your private tour guide will be with you every step of the way to make sure you have a memorable day. The market is alive with the bright colours and extravagant costumes of the local people, here you will meet Flower Hmong (Red Hmong), Black Dao, Tay, Nung, La Chi, Phu La and other tribal groups who come from far and wide to buy and sell a wide variety of goods and livestock, to exchange news and to renew friendships. In the past the market was a centre for trading horses but now that motorbikes have replaced them it is more common to see buffalo, cows, goats, fish and other livestock being traded. The market opens at around 7.30am and closes mid-afternoon.

For this trek I will guide you through beautiful rice terraces and hills and pass by streams and water buffalos. As there are many different trails, I can change the route depending on your preferences. I will introduce you to the Hmong culture by showing you the lifestyle of my people, e.g. traditional weaving and dying of hemp cloths. We will also explore the culture of the Zai people, another minority tribe. I can pick you up at 8am at the stone church in Sa Pa or at your hotel. We can either have lunch in Lao Chai at a local restaurant or my house. The trip ends in Ta Van where we will take the bus back to Sa Pa.
