The Rongai Route is one of the easiest routes and the success rate is very high. The route starts on the north side of the mountain just south of the Kenyan border, and is one of the least traveled routes. The descent is down the Marangu Route on the south side of the mountain, so climbers see the mountain from many view points. The drive to the trail head takes about 3 hours from Moshi through many villages and coffee plantations, including a stop to register climbing permits at Marangu. The Rongai Route can also be accessed from Amboseli National Park in Kenya. Allow 2 hours including border crossing. We will need copies of passports ahead of time.

Northern Circuit Route: The Northern Circuit is the newest and longest route on Mount Kilimanjaro. It begins in the West at the Londorossi Gate and follows the same path as the Lemosho route for the first two days. After crossing the Shira plateau the path veers north near Lava Tower, following the longer Northern Circuit instead of the more popular Southern Circuit via Barranco Valley The route circles around the quieter northern slopes to the east side of the mountain. The Northern Circuit is longer than the other trails on Kilimanjaro, taking a minimum of eight or nine days to complete. The eight day trek skips the additional acclimatization day that is usually spent at Shira Camp 2 and continues straight on to Moir Camp.

The Machame route is also known as the Whiskey route, given its reputation for being a tough climb, in contrast to the easier Marangu route, which is known as the Coca Cola route. Unlike the gradual incline and hut accomodations found on the Marangu Route, the climbers on Machame hike steeper trails, for longer distances, while sleeping in tents. The Machame Route climb can be done in a minimum of six days (five nights) on the mountain. However, it is most often tackled over seven days (six nights), for a better altitude acclimatization schedule. The trek begins at Machame Gate, located in the southern base of mountain, within its lush, fertile rainforest. The route heads toward the Shira Plateau, before circling along the southern circuit halfway around the mountain, exposing the climber to great views from all angles. The approach to the summit is made from the east, and the descent follows the Mweka trail.

This non-technical Kilimanjaro camping route is the only one to start from the Northern side of the mountain. Rongai approaches the main Kilimanjaro (Kibo) cone from the Northeast which usually is drier (helping avoid rainfall) and descends via the Marangu route on the Southeast. Though we consider this less physically demanding than other routes (no scrambling sections as you get on the southern circuit routes), short treks do not offer acclimatization opportunities and the easier walk may catch up with you at the higher altitudes, however more days spent on the Mountain increase your chance to summit.

You'll pass through a forest reserve on the way to West Kilimanjaro, where you can drive and spot Colobus monkeys among the trees. You begin your hike at 3,500 meters above sea level and proceed through the stunningly untamed Shira Plateau landscape. You'll step out of the vehicle, put on your shoes, and enjoy the sights, sounds, and hues of Tanzania's breathtaking wilderness. When the weather permits, you can see views of Kilimanjaro's northern glaciers and its highest peak, Kibo, while hiking various trails under the guidance of a ranger. The views of the highest free-standing mountain in the world are juxtaposed with the vast plains of the neighboring Amboseli National Park in Kenya and the deep gorge of the Simba River. You will make a brief stop at various observation points along the northern rim of Shira Crater to observe the volcanic cones that dot the surrounding terrain. Following a four-hour hike—or shorter if your legs tire—you will return to your hotel.

Renowned for its captivating scenic beauty, abundant wildlife, optimal acclimatization possibilities, and relatively low climber traffic, the Lemosho route stands out as one of the premier choices for ascending Mount Kilimanjaro. Furthermore, it happens to be our personal favorite for conquering the summit of Africa. Your journey begins with a roughly 4-hour drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate, which marks the entry point on the western flank of Mt. Kilimanjaro. From here, the route unfolds, leading you to the iconic Shira Plateau, where your extraordinary adventure will encompass traversing diverse climate zones, ranging from alpine meadows to the realm of perpetual ice. The ascent follows a gradual and manageable incline, contributing to the Lemosho route's impressive track record of achieving the highest success rate among all Kilimanjaro routes.

Marangu Route: Known as the “Coca-Cola” route, the Marangu route is a classic trek on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the oldest, most well established route. Many favor the Marangu route because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope. It is also the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations. The minimum days required for this route is five, although the probability of successfully reaching the top in that time period is quite low. Spending an extra acclimatization day on the mountain is highly recommended when climbing Klimanjaro using the Marangu route. However, despite its immense popularity, we avoid leading climbs on the Marangu route. The route has the least scenic variety of all the routes because the ascent and descent are done on the same path and it is the most crowded route for that reason. Marangu is favored only during the rainy season, where the hut accommodations are preferred.
