Kuzu district, Yoshino Town, Nara Prefecture Kuzu Village is a production area for three types of traditional washi (Japanese paper): Uda paper, Misu paper, and Yoshino paper. These papers play a vital role in preserving Japan's cultural heritage and some are also used internationally for restoring paintings. Their hallmark features are their remarkable thinness and strength. The handmade washi-making techniques of Yoshino are said to have been passed down for over a thousand years. This experience offers participants the unique opportunity to learn about and use traditional tools, such as the sudare (bamboo screen), which are typically not available in standard workshops. Under the guidance of skilled artisans, you will learn the traditional process of preparing kozo (paper mulberry), the primary material for washi. Over the course of half a day, you will handcraft approximately two sheets of washi paper that you can take home at the end of the experience.
