We visit a former Nazi concentration camp, with its barracks, memorials and crematorium. Corrie Ten Boom was imprisoned here during the war. Many Jewish children were sent to Poland from here and hundreds of resistance members were executed. We will also visit the sites of Operation Market Garden and the battle of Arnhem: what was the plan and how did it fail? What were the implications for the Dutch people and the Allied forces? This small group tour takes you through centuries of history: from Europe’s Middle Ages to the era of the 17th century and the splendor of the 20th century! After picking you up at our eeting point, we start the day at the famous Muideslot castle, first built in the 13th century by count Floris V. In the 17th century the castle was the favorite residence of writer and poet P.C. Hooft. Restored by Architect Pierre Cuypers it is now open to the public to explore. We tour the castle as well as the beautiful gardens! After lunch we visit the magnificent Castle de Haar, reconstructed in 1890 on its medieval foundations, where Baron and Baroness van Zuylen entertained their famous guests! Anne's famous diary ends a few days before she, and the others, were suddenly arrested and put on transport, ultimately to her death. In a one-day tour outside Amsterdam we will take you to Camp Westerbork, the transit camp from where Anne Frank, and more than a 100.000 Jewish people with her were sent to Auschwitz and other camps. Not many would return. By following her footsteps, we will learn about many more people, places and events to tell the story of the German occupation of the Netherlands during World War 2. By visiting the sites and telling the stories of normal people under extreme circumstances we will bring the time of the war closer to home. With the use of authentic photos and videos, and by explaining the events from all perspectives, we will find out about the motives of the people involved, and we will ultimately ask the question: Could this happen again in our time?
