Alexandria has a history that is inextricably linked to the founding of the United States of America. George Washington was a Virginian, having been born at Pope Creek Plantation in Westmoreland County, within a mile from the Potomac River. Throughout the years, the family alternated between Ferry Farms near Fredericksburg and Little Hunting Creek Plantation, or Mount Vernon. Our nation's founding father began his career as a surveyor, and Alexandria was one of the first communities he surveyed and planned. On this walking tour of Alexandria, follow in the footsteps of George Washington.
