Home to a vast burial site from the 2nd, 3rd & 4th centuries. Made up of catacombs that house many sarcophagi that are adorned with ellaborate symbols & figures. The site is often likened to a book carved in stone.
smonean era (167 B.C.E - 63 B.C.E.) Has a rich & diverse historical & architectural legacy that includes Jewish, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Crusader & Ottoman influences. Its most famous resident was Rabbi Judah Ha Nasi (redactor of the Mishna).
