1416/1418 – August 7, 1496) was the eighteenth Sultan of the Burji Mamluks. Born Circassian, he was purchased by Sultan Barsbay and later freed by Sultan Jaqmaq. During his reign, he stabilized the Mamluk state and strengthened its northern borders against the Ottomans. Though he led numerous military campaigns, Qaitbay is best remembered for his architectural patronage, leaving his mark on Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem, Damascus, Aleppo, Alexandria, and Cairo.

This is Egypt's second most important city, after the capital, Cairo. While the amphitheaters were spread throught different countries like Greece, Italy, and Turkey during the reign of the Romans with many examples of these structures still present in many regions around Europe and the Middle East, the Roman Amphitheatre of Alexandria is the only one of its type in Egypt.
