I miss Tsuivan more than anything when I’m away from home. So I built an afternoon around it. You’ll meet me at Chinggis Square and we’ll walk, not toward monuments, but through the streets I actually grew up on. Markets, schoolyards, and the railway station where I sold soda as a kid during my summer holidays. Ulaanbaatar as it’s lived, not as it’s photographed. Then we go home. My home, on the tenth floor, with the city spread out below us. Tea first, then a game of Shagai, the way Mongolian families have played it for generations. Then into the kitchen: you’ll roll the dough, cut the noodles, and cook Tsuivan the way it’s always been made in Mongolian homes. By the time we sit down, the meal on the table is yours. You made it. Small group, never more than four guests. No script, no rush. Just Ulaanbaatar for an afternoon, experienced as a guest in a real Mongolian home.

Common questions about booking Ulaanbaatar experiences through SimilarTours
Summer (June to August) is peak season - weather's stable, Naadam festival happens in July, and most multi-day tours operate fully. Winter is harsh but possible if you want fewer crowds. Book popular tours 2-3 months ahead, especially if Naadam overlaps your dates.
Absolutely. The terrain is remote, roads are rough, and navigating nomadic communities requires local knowledge and language skills. Guides handle logistics, safety, and cultural context - they're not optional for 11+ day trips. Most tours come with private guides, drivers, and horses included.
Tours typically pick you up from Ulaanbaatar and handle all transport - whether that's 4x4 vehicles, motorcycles, or horses depending on the trip. Domestic flights connect to regional hubs if you're doing multi-region itineraries. Check before you go on whether your tour includes airport transfers.
Layers are essential - summers are warm but nights get cold, especially at higher elevations. Sturdy boots, a good sleeping bag if you're camping, and sun protection are non-negotiable. Ask your tour operator for a specific packing list since conditions vary between desert trips, lake treks, and Gobi expeditions.
Yes - several operators offer family-focused itineraries with adjusted pacing, shorter riding days, and kid-friendly accommodation like gers. Younger children may struggle on 15-day horseback treks, but 8-12 day family tours are common. Check the specific tour's age recommendations before booking.
Most cover accommodation (gers or camps), all meals, guide, transportation, horses or vehicles, and activities. What varies is whether it's private or small group, quality of camps, and extras like stargazing programs or Naadam festival access. Read the full itinerary carefully since "included" differs between operators.
Mongolia requires a valid passport but many nationalities get visa-free entry or visas on arrival - check your country's requirements beforehand. Tour operators often handle any permits needed for protected areas or nomadic family visits. Confirm with your booked tour operator well ahead.

Visitors here book extended multi-day adventures - 11 to 15-day treks on horseback, motorcycle expeditions across the Gobi, stays with nomadic families, and trips to Khuvsgul Lake. Summer brings Naadam festival tours with glamping, while stargazing retreats and family-focused itineraries run year-round. Most trips involve serious time in the saddle or on rough terrain, so this destination rewards travelers who want immersion over quick sightseeing.
