Popular routes like the Saas-Fee to Zermatt hike book up fast in peak season. Aim for at least 2-3 months in advance if you're going July or August. Outside summer months, booking 4-6 weeks ahead usually works fine.

Train connections between valleys exist but are slow and often require changes. Most visitors book private transfers between mountain bases or to the airport - it's more convenient than piecing together public transit. Within villages, everything's walkable.

If you're doing multi-day alpine hut routes, guides handle route-finding, hut logistics, and know where to avoid sketchy snow or rockfall. For day hikes on well-marked trails, a guide is optional. Many people do mix both - hire a guide for one or two days and go self-guided on others.
