Honest tour of must-sees with the best* private guide of Riga Every city has it's good, bad and the ugly, and there's always the option of highlighting just one side of the coin. On this tour we try our hardest to stay as honest and objective as possible, not loosing the perspective of a local at the same time. 4-5 hours, including a coffee break, might seem long, but a half day tour like that is the shortest possible time to cover all the most important sights that Riga's heart has to offer without a rush. Still - depending on your desire or availability, it can be longer or shorter as well - you can decide during the tour. It's customisable as well, so if you'd like to drop a thing from the itinerary or add something different (eg, central market), the guide will be happy to adjust. We don't take tours more than 5 times a week, so the tour would stay fresh and the guide wouldn't become a machine of spouting facts and figures. * as described by his mother and some of his friends.

A private tour through the tastes and flavours of people of Latvia. Through centuries Latvians have absorbed traditions and cuisines from all the cultures that has ruled in these lands - Germans, Swedes, Russians - and after all, even Soviet Union had it's own way of doing kitchen stuff. Maybe because of taste, but probably because of necessity latvians have acquired their own distinct taste for stuff and this tour is all about that. First we'll wander through the central market and have a taste of whatever seasonal products are available (around 10 different types of foods/drinks) and then move on to an post soviet style "cafeteria" where you'll be able to enjoy a proper meal of Latvian traditional foods. So if you choose to book this tour please come hungry:) Keep in mind - we mostly eat seasonal stuff, therefore the foods can vary greatly from tour to tour, so the attached pictures are just an exam

Riga can be very different depending on which part of it you're in. On this tour you'll see all the various districts and hear about how they came to be and what they are now. Starting from the early 20th century's Art Noveau and garden city, wooden houses, little gardens on an island in the river, through soviet occupation with it's monumentalism, but also scant functionalism, then back to the independent Latvia's modern architecture - this tour has it all. You'll get from place to place in a comfortable vehicle driven by your guide, but keep in mind - there's still quite a bit of walking involved. If you've already seen (or just don't want to see) the Medieval Old Town, this is the best choice. Most of the places in this tour are less or non touristy, so you'd get a better perspective on what Riga really is. Alternatively - if you haven't seen the Old Town yet, but only have one day, we can pop it in the itinerary as well - the tour is highly customisable. Just let us know!

The Salaspils Memorial Ensemble was created in the place where National Socialistic Germany had a police prison and labour correctional camp (from 1941 to 1945). This beautiful memorial site was open in 1967 (Soviet days) as the Soviet Union politics were concentrating on hiding the bad moves of J.Stalin and instead wanted to show to the world the bad stuff done by Nazis. The memorial creates a symbol of the border between life and death with a 100 metre-long concrete wall, on which is written – “Beyond these gates the land groans”. There are also seven concrete sculptures: “Mother”, “The Unbroken”, “The humuliated”, “Protest”, “Red Front”, “Solidarity”,“The Oath”. A beautiful addition to the memorial - indoors exhibition open for visitors to learn from written materials, photos and also video materials where you'll see older people sharing their memories about how they managed to escape or skip the camp. The Hill of Crosses in Lithuania is a spectacular and unique site like no other! It is a site of pilgrimage dating back to 1830ties when people started to place crosses here to pray for their loved ones they've lost in the battles (Lithuanian - Polish commonwealth uprising against Russian Empire). In Soviet times this place served as a peaceful protest action against Soviet regime as they tried to destroy the place many times while locals kept coming back and placing more crosses all the time. The Hill of Crosses was visited by Pope John Paul II back in 1993 and since then this place has become very popular - not only between locals but also tourists from all over the world! You're welcome to be a part of this unique growing site by leaving a cross on the hill. You can purchase the cross on the site, bring it with you from your home country or even make one yourself!

Have fun and change from busy urban environment to beautiful nature, just on the edge of Riga. Go with ease on ebike motor assisted cycling on forest trails and roads. We will start our trip from Fire watch tower, where you can see beautifull panoramic views of surrounding forests, meadows and highest buildings of Riga. Our journey will take place in an area surrounded by long dune ridges, which are about 10 kilometers long and 0.4 to 1.5 kilometers wide. Local residents call this strip of dunes "Sahara of Riga". Unlike the Sahara dunes, the Riga dunes are covered with planted pine forests. These dunes are a natural monument of Latvia. We will go all the way to Jūrmala's White Dune, which is a large sand dune on the shore of Lielupe and is one of the most beautiful protected natural objects in Jūrmala. We will conclude our trip at our starting point.

This Soviet Riga tour provides a compelling view of life under occupation, grounded in the memories of those who lived it. Our local guides use significant city centre landmarks, such as the imposing Latvian Riflemen Monument and the notorious KGB "Corner House," to share personal accounts and human stories of survival, quiet resistance, and the struggle to maintain Latvian identity right here in the heart of Riga. The tour offers a nuanced understanding of the heavy shadow the Soviet regime cast and the resilience shown by the people until independence was regained.

Common questions about booking Riga experiences through SimilarTours
Summer (June-August) brings long daylight hours and warmth ideal for outdoor tours like the Gauja hiking adventures and balloon flights over Rundale Palace. Winter's shorter and colder, but the city's festive side comes alive, and you'll dodge crowds. Spring and autumn offer a middle ground - mild weather and fewer tourists.
The 11-day Baltic impression tours and small group loops with guaranteed departures fill up weeks in advance, especially in summer. If you're traveling peak season and want a specific departure date, book a month ahead. Off-season gives you more flexibility, but some tours run fewer departures - check before you go.
For city exploration, a private Riga walking tour handles the Art Nouveau and old town context brilliantly in an afternoon. For anything beyond the city - Rundale, the coast, Gauja National Park - a guide saves you transport logistics and gives you real insight into Latvian culture. Self-guided hiking in Gauja works if you're confident with maps; otherwise, group hikes keep costs down.
Yes - the 11-day Baltic impression tour and the mini Baltic loop (Vilnius, Trakai, Hill of Crosses, Rundale, Bauska, Riga) do exactly this with transport included. Private Riga-Vilnius transfers also work if you want flexibility. Most multi-country tours handle visas and borders for you.
Accommodation, guided sightseeing, and transport between stops are standard across the 8-day and 11-day regional tours. Some meals appear in itineraries, but check before you go - not all tours include full board. Day tours like the coastal trip usually cover the guide and transport only.
The catalog shows everything from corporate team-building packages to family-inclusive regional tours. The balloon flight and coastal day trip appeal to families; hiking adventures suit active travelers. Check the tour details for age recommendations and accessibility needs before booking.
The old town is walkable, and Riga has decent local buses and a tram system. Jurmala beach is accessible by commuter train from the city center. If you're doing day trips to Rundale or Gauja on your own, car rental or local coaches work - just allow extra time for logistics.

Riga's a compact Baltic capital with Art Nouveau architecture, cobblestone old town, and a thriving cultural scene that punches well above its size. Visitors here tend to book multi-day regional tours that sweep through all three Baltic countries, day trips to coastal Jurmala or the castles around Rundale, and outdoor adventures in Gauja National Park where hiking stretches across a week if you want it. The prison break experience and hot air balloon flights show people want quirky, memorable activities alongside the expected sightseeing. You'll find everything from self-guided hiking to small group loops with guaranteed departures, so whether you're here for a quick city break or tackling the whole region takes real planning.
