A city walking tour that will introduce you to Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, and it's administrative, cultural and economic centre. The wider area has been inhabited since the Stone Age, but its urban history starts with the arrival of the Romans in the 2nd century B.C. Dating from the period of Illyrian-Roman wars, Podgorica was always at the crossroads for Greek travellers, Roman legionnaires, Byzantine messengers, Serbian noblemen, Venetian merchants, Turkish invaders, Montenegrin warriors... More than 70 bombings in the Second World War have wiped out many buildings and monuments from the previous centuries. During our 90 minutes walk, we will pass by some of these remaining traces of the previous centuries but will also take a look at the way the city was rebuilt during the communist period and in the later decades.

This is our bestselling tour, taking you to one of the wildest and most remote parts of the lake that most other tours rarely reach. With our faster boat, we easily cross the open water, while in the narrow channels we move slowly and carefully through peaceful natural surroundings. At the start of the tour, we pass by Lesendro Fortress and continue toward the famous three islands, where wide fields of water lilies stretch across the channels. From there, we head across the lake toward more distant and less visited waterways. Our destination is a hidden area we call the “Amazon.” Here, narrow and shallow channels wind through dense willow trees, reeds, and water lilies. Because of fallen branches and low water levels, larger boats cannot enter this area, which keeps it quiet and untouched. This peaceful part of the lake is home to many bird species, including kingfishers and herons. The tour offers a different side of the lake — calm, wild, and less explored.

Common questions about booking Podgorica experiences through SimilarTours
Late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) are sweet spots - warm without the summer heat that can make mountain hiking brutal. If you're eyeing one of the longer private tours or the hiking-focused ones, book 4-6 weeks ahead, especially for July-August or the New Year season.
Absolutely. The terrain here - canyons, alpine passes, river sections - demands local knowledge to do safely and well. The tours on offer are almost all private or semi-private affairs, not large groups, so you get personalized routing and the guide's real judgment about conditions that day.
Car rental from Podgorica works if you're confident driving mountain roads. Public transport exists but is patchy for reaching trailheads and remote valleys. Most visitors book the tours - they handle logistics and you avoid the headache.
Most private tours cover accommodation, guided activities (hiking, kayaking, rafting as listed), and meals - check before you go for specifics on each operator, as inclusions vary. Transport from Podgorica is usually included for the activities themselves.
The 'chill out' and 'relax and enjoy' options suggest gentler pacing, while the Alpine trails are serious business. Check the operator's details on fitness level required - a good guide can scale the experience, but five-day hiking tours aren't usually beginner territory.
For off-season (November-April), a couple of weeks is often fine. Summer and the New Year period fill up - aim for 6-8 weeks if you want your preferred dates and guide.

Montenegro
Podgorica is Montenegro's gateway to some of the Balkans' most dramatic terrain - think limestone peaks, turquoise rivers, and valleys that feel untouched. Most visitors here skip the capital itself and head straight into the mountains or out to the coast, booking multi-day private tours that string together hiking, kayaking, and rafting. Whether you're after a week of serious Alpine trails, a gentler mix of culture and nature, or just five days to unwind between the peaks and water, the tours on offer tend to be tailored affairs rather than group stampedes.
