Very little wildlife exists here during the harsh dry season of strong hot winds and only salt water, but following a rainy season, the pan becomes an important habitat for migrating animals, including wildebeest, one of Africa's biggest zebra populations, flamingos, and the large predators that prey on them.

Common questions about booking Maun experiences through SimilarTours
Dry season (May to September) brings wildlife to water sources and gives you clearer skies for game viewing - this is peak booking time. Green season (November to March) means lush landscapes and fewer tourists, but higher rainfall can make some roads trickier. Check before you go to match your tour operator's preferred season.
Most travellers book 2-3 months in advance for peak season trips, especially if you want specific date ranges or guides with strong reputations. Longer expeditions (15-28 days) need more lead time because operators juggle multiple groups and park permits. For off-season visits you might have more flexibility.
Yes - guides spot wildlife you'd miss solo, navigate complex park access rules, and handle logistics like park fees and camp setups. Nearly all bookings here are fully guided multi-day safaris because the terrain and wildlife require trained eyes and local knowledge.
Most packages cover accommodation (usually mobile camping under canvas), all meals, game drives or walks, park fees, and internal transport - some add airport pickups from Maun. Check your specific tour terms for what extras like alcohol, tips, or equipment rentals cost separately.
Nearly every safari booking includes airport pickup and all internal transport in Botswana. You'll fly into Maun's Sir Seretse Khama International Airport, and your operator handles everything from there - no need to arrange your own vehicles or transfers.
Family safaris exist - mobile camping works for older kids comfortable sleeping in tents. For mobility concerns, speak directly with your operator before booking since terrain, vehicle types, and camp facilities vary widely. Some shorter or lodge-based options are more accessible than remote mobile camps.
Mobile camping means moving between campsites every few nights across multiple reserves - it's immersive but requires comfort with basic conditions. Walking safaris put you on foot with a guide for up-close tracking. Private camping safaris often let you customize the pace and parks. Check tour details for which style matches your travel style.

Botswana
Maun is your launchpad into Botswana's wild heart. Most travellers here string together multi-week safaris - 10 to 28 days is common - mixing mobile camping in the Okavango Delta, Central Kalahari, and Moremi Game Reserve with walks on foot and vehicle-based game drives. You'll see why: this is serious wildlife country where elephant tracking, birdwatching, and close encounters with big cats dominate itineraries. Many tours include airport pickups and multi-park routes that swing through Chobe and Victoria Falls, turning Maun into the natural base for a full Botswana expedition rather than a quick stop.
