Join us for a small-group Northern Lights adventure from Bodø where we go all-in to give you the best possible chance of seeing the Aurora. We follow the weather, cloud cover and Aurora forecasts throughout the evening and use our local knowledge to decide where to go. If conditions around Bodø are not favourable, we go further into the countryside, sometimes towards the Swedish border. We don’t have a fixed turnaround time. When conditions are challenging but there is still a realistic chance of seeing the Northern Lights, we stay out longer, giving the skies more time to clear. Some nights this means returning to Bodø as late as around 2 AM. Our approach has resulted in an Aurora sighting rate of around 85%. We travel in a comfortable Mercedes 4WD van with a maximum of six guests. We’ll share local knowledge about the landscape and the Aurora, take high-quality photos for you, and provide warm drinks and snacks. Warm clothing and headlamps are also available if needed.

A day trip to Mjelle is popular among locals and a great place for a quick getaway from Bodø. The sand of this secluded beach is both white and red. The red sand takes its colour from gemstone particles (garnet minerals). Ideal for children: Getting to the Mjelle Beach is an easy stroll even for young ones, as it’s only a 30-minute walk from the car park. For young children, the beach is a giant sandpit with free rocks and shells.

The tour starts with driving away from the crowds and city lights, moving at an unhurried pace to find clear, open skies, with a maximum of 4 guests for a calm, intimate experience. The group settles into the Arctic night, watching the sky, and if the lights appear, everyone stays with them as the colors shift and dance while the guide shares stories, helps with camera settings, and, weather permitting, keeps a bonfire going. The northern lights are completely natural, so sightings can never be guaranteed. We will always do our best to search for them. The visibility depends on clear skies and solar activity, so the only thing we can control is driving to areas with the best weather conditions. Warm drinks and traditional snacks are enjoyed throughout, with photos taken of guests against the Arctic sky, in a quiet, nature-based evening designed for adults.

Common questions about booking Bodo experiences through SimilarTours
Winter (November to January) is prime for northern lights hunting and snowmobile adventures. Summer and autumn (June to September) suit photography tours and wildlife spotting in Lofoten and Vesterålen, when the midnight sun or near-daylight makes for dramatic light. Check before you go-Arctic weather shifts fast, and some activities run seasonally.
Book at least a week or two ahead, especially in peak winter season. Popular multi-day tours (7-day Lofoten photography trips, private safaris) can fill up, so earlier is safer if you have specific dates.
Yes, if you want flexibility and local knowledge. Most visitors here hire private guides for wildlife safaris, shore excursions, and specialized climbs-you get routes tailored to conditions and avoid group schedules. Group ferries and coach tours exist too if you prefer lower costs.
Airport transfers and private car tours are easy to arrange. Coastal ferries (Hurtigruten and Havila) sail daily to Lofoten, and many tours include van or car transport as part of the package.
Most 7-day trips include transport by van or ferry, guided excursions, and sometimes meals or accommodation-check before you book, as packages vary. Shorter day tours typically cover guide and transport only.
Boat tours and coach trips work for most fitness levels. Snowmobile rides and climbing (like Hamarøyskaftet) require moderate fitness-ask operators about age and ability limits before booking.
Not necessarily. Ferries, guided tours, and private transfers cover most visitor routes. Rent a car if you want to explore independently between tours, but book early in winter.

Norway
Bodø is your gateway to Norway's Arctic, a place where the landscape shifts dramatically between seasons and adventure is the default setting. In winter, most visitors here chase the northern lights on snowmobiles or join boat tours hunting for them across the Arctic night. Summer and autumn draw photographers and wildlife watchers to the Lofoten Islands and Vesterålen, either on multi-day van tours or day trips via coastal ferries. You'll find private guides handling everything from shore excursions to climbing expeditions, plus straightforward airport transfers when you arrive. It's not a city trip-it's a launch pad for serious Arctic experiences.
