Most travellers base themselves in Noumea and book out from there - lagoon sailing, private 4x4 expeditions into the deep south, airport transfers, and guided city tours fill the calendar. The reality is less about staying put and more about day trips: you'll find catamaran cruises launching from Noumea, adventure-focused 4x4 routes toward Bourail in the north and into the southern highlands, and private guides handling the logistics. Many visitors mix it - a few nights in Noumea, then a guided full-day south loop, then maybe the lighthouse. It's a small place, so short hops work.
