Getting started

Begin with hotel pick-up in Hanoi City Centre, where your private vehicle takes you directly to the Thang Long Imperial Citadel. Your entrance ticket is handled for you, so you proceed inside without separate on-site purchasing. After meeting your expert English-speaking guide, you start your half-day tour with bottled drinking water provided and all local taxes and entrance fees already taken care of.

What to expect

Thang Long Imperial Citadel

This UNESCO World Heritage site sits in the heart of Hanoi and brings together royal, colonial, and modern military layers of Vietnamese history in one complex. Your private half-day guided tour keeps the pace tailored to your group as you move through key gates, palaces, towers, and wartime structures.

Features

• The route typically includes the Hanoi Flag Tower, Doan Mon Gate, and the Kinh Thien Palace dragon staircases, so you can see how different dynasties and eras left their marks on the citadel grounds.

• At the D67 Command Bunker, you step into an underground wartime space used during the Vietnam War, gaining context on how the citadel functioned as a military headquarters.

• Throughout the visit, your expert English-speaking guide leads the commentary, while bottled drinking water is available during the tour and all local taxes and entrance fees are already included in your booking.

• Private round-trip transfers in a dedicated vehicle frame your experience from hotel pick-up to drop-off, forming a seamless half-day guided visit inside Thang Long Imperial Citadel.

18 Hoang Dieu Archaeological Site

Across the road from the main citadel area, the 18 Hoang Dieu Archaeological Site reveals foundations and artifacts that were uncovered during modern excavations. This stop adds an underground and structural dimension to what you have just seen above ground.

Features

• Excavated palace foundations and ancient artifacts show how the royal compound evolved over more than 1,000 years, from early dynasties to later capitals.

• Your entry to 18 Hoang Dieu is already included as part of the tour, and your private English-speaking guide helps you interpret the exposed layers and structures within the archaeological zone.

North Gate (Bac Mon)

The historic North Gate, or Bac Mon, is one of the remaining original gates of the ancient Hanoi citadel. It stands slightly apart from the main palace area and adds an external perspective on the old defensive walls.

Features

• You see the original 1882 French cannon battle marks still visible on Bac Mon, a physical reminder of the colonial-era conflicts that reshaped the city’s fortifications.

• Time at the North Gate rounds out your entry to Thang Long Imperial Citadel and 18 Hoang Dieu, with your guide tying together how these different points fit into Hanoi’s wider historical landscape.
