After being welcomed with coffee and fresh local fruits, mount up and begin your ride through pasturelands toward the eastern rim of the Debed Canyon. Along the way, you will come across a medieval watchtower and numerous medievalcross-stones, including Sirun Khach (“Beautiful Cross”), which won second prize at a Paris competition in 1970.You will continue along the edge of the cliff, where dramatic views open over the Marts River Gorge. An optional one-hour walk through a wooded path will take you to the St. Gregory Monastery, dating from the 12th– 13th cc. Afterward, you will do some cantering toward Dsegh village and visit the House-Museum of the prominent Armenian poet Hovhannes Tumanyan—an excellent example of an early 19th-centuryArmenian peasant home. Nearby, you can also see the 10th–12th-century cemetery of the distinguished Mamikonyan princely family. Finally, your last trails through the hillside forests will bring you back to the lakefront.
