The Rainbow Warrior is one of the world's premier wreck dives and a piece of New Zealand history. Diving the Bay of Islands since 1978, Paihia Dive gets you there with a scenic drive, a fun beach launch and just an 8-minute boat ride. Open Water divers are welcome with an instructor, solo bookings are fine, and all gear is included.
The Rainbow Warrior was Greenpeace's flagship, sunk by French agents in Auckland Harbour in 1985 and later laid to rest in the Cavalli Islands as an artificial reef. At a maximum depth of 26m, she is now home to a huge variety of marine life. We drive 45 minutes north from Paihia to Matauri Bay, launch our 7.5m RIB Aka Maru from the beach, and it's just an 8-minute ride to the wreck. After the wreck dive we stop on a Cavalli Islands beach for lunch and snorkelling, then do a second dive on the volcanic reefs, normally 18m or shallower, with swim-throughs, tunnels and caves. Back at Matauri Bay about 2:30pm and Paihia around 4:00pm. Advanced divers dive the wreck with the group (dived in the last 18 months). Open Water divers dive it with an instructor as an SSI Deep Adventure Dive (dived in the last 12 months). All scuba gear is included.
Meet at the Paihia Dive shop, 35 Williams Road, Paihia (blue shopfront) at 7:45am for gear fitting and paperwork. We leave at 8:30am in our van, towing the dive boat 45 minutes north to Matauri Bay, where we launch from the beach.
For a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time.
