Known in Thai as Wat Phra Yai, its golden, 12 metre tall seated Buddha statue was built in 1972 and remains one of the island’s most popular attractions. Set on Koh Faan, Big Buddha temple is reached by a small road that connects it to the main island. The Big Buddha can be seen at a distance of several kilometres and is often the first landmark people see when arriving in Samui by air.

This well known monk, Luang Pordaeng, who passed away in 1973 while meditating in a seated position, is displayed in a glass case and even after 40 years his body shows very little signs of decay. For westerners it might be a strange image seeing a dead body displayed to the public but for most buddhistic thais death is the next step in reaching the highest goal, the nirvana.
The water fall is only a short walk from the car park and is a great chance to see the interior jungle canopy of Koh Samui.
